First Solo Exhibition: Alterations
Artists have always altered stories, materials and objects, picking up where others left off and recontextualizing what is known or expected. Like a tailor modifying a garment to better fit a unique form, the artists in Alterations similarly engage with creative methods of taking in and letting out. Working through a feminist lens, they imbue female Greek mythology characters with agency and power, reclaim their relationship to girlhood, and celebrate the complexities of parenting through painting, soft sculpture and prints. The tactile breadth of works in this show reveal ways that the process of altering has potential for healing, liberation and wonder.

MAGGIE WHITTEMORE is a painter and illustrator based in Boston, MA. Her current works are medium to large-scale oil paintings and digital paintings, mainly using the nude female form and natural surroundings in surreal or unexpected ways. These works are her attempt to capture the beauty and complexities of authentic self-expression and acceptance as a woman in a patriarchal world. Her current motif, ‘reverse sirens’, are nude women with fish heads. This collection presents a new narrative for the female nude in painting, a reclamation of discarded parts and identities in the wake of trauma. The main collection features four famous victims of Zeus in Greek myth, giving them new narratives where they triumph, actualize, and find a supportive community.
